10 Things We Learned from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Trailer

by Adam Sweeney/@atxpoprocks

Finally! We have a trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, two months away from the premiere of arguably the biggest film premiere ever. And man, was it a good one. Action, suspense, and spectacle are all in the two minutes and thirty-five seconds of footage, and we still are left with a world of mystery heading into the film. But we did gain some valuable insight from the trailer. Here are 10 things we learned from The Force Awakens trailer. (Spoiler alert, because obviously.)

The Jedi and Sith are nearly extinct.

Rey (Daisy Ridley) speaks of stories and legends and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) confirms that they are all real. “The Jedi. The Dark Side. All of it.” So we can put together that both Orders went the way of the buffalo. Perhaps this film represents a race against time as Rey and Friends are on the hunt to find Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) before Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) gets to him. The lines about both parties gave us the chills, as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are now now legends in a galaxy far, far away. All that is left, to our knowledge, is Luke.

Kylo Ren and Finn Unmasked

We know Kylo Ren and Finn (John Boyega) are going to throw down but now we know that Kylo Ren does it unmasked. What brings about the urge to reveal himself to Finn? And how well will Finn, a trained soldier but not one with lightsaber training (that we know of), fare against the film’s big bad? For the record, I am still not convinced that Finn will become a Jedi. I think this footage is a hard sell from Abrams to throw us off the scent. The man is a fan of red herrings, after all, or did you forget when he told the world for ages that Khan wasn’t in Star Trek: Into Darkness?

Rey Scavenges a Star Destroyer … but for What?

The opening shots display Rey in disguise, combing the depths of what appear to be an long-abandoned Star Destroyer. Is this where she finds Luke’s lightsaber? Be sure to watch the scene again for a nod to A New Hope, where Rey swings on a rope a la Luke Skywalker. Perhaps this is foreshadowing for her future.

Finn was Raised as a Stormtrooper.

“I was raised to do one thing. But I’ve got nothing to fight for.” So says Finn, who clearly has been trained to battle for a long time. We have read descriptions of the character that say he is struggling to right the wrongs of his past. He appears to be in line for a new fight, this time on the other side with The Resistance.

Kylo Ren is a Man on a Mission

We witness the dark sider talking to the melted mask of Darth Vader, stating, “Nothing will stand in our way. I will finish what you started.” We know that Ren is obsessed with the former Sith Lord and now we know that his goals fall in line with that of the baddest Sith in the Original Trilogy. Kill the Jedi and rule the galaxy.

Kylo Ren Has Ways of Making Poe Dameron Talk

We finally get to see Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) outside of his X-Wing but it’s not exactly how we think he would prefer it. On his knees, Poe is screaming as Kylo Ren appears to be either torturing him or flooding his mind with terrible visions of the future.

Introducing The Knights of Ren

We have heard from director J.J. Abrams about Kylo Ren’s posse, the Knight of Ren. Now we finally get to see them surrounding their leader in the pouring rain. Like Ren, they all are masked but he appears to be the only one with the elegant weapon of a lightsaber. Also, a creepy element of these shots is displayed when the lightning hits. You can see bodies strewn all over the ground as the KOR rally around each other.

Does this band of brothers indicate that Kylo Ren is creating his own order or are these the beginnings of a new Sith Academy?

Don’t Cry for Me, Daisy Ridley

Rey is on a jungle planet and in deep pain. We see her later in the trailer channeling her anger (foreshadowing of a turn to the Dark Side?) as she fires a blaster repeatedly in anger. It is clear from the trailer that she is a character that exists in a gray area. She is without question the main character of this film. The question is will she end up on the Light or Dark Side of The Force as the trilogy continues.

Maz Kanata Is Connecting Someone to The Force

“The Force is calling to you. All you have to do is let it in,” is what character of mystery Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o)  says … but to who? The order of lines said in the trailer lead us to believe that she is speaking to Rey, but we have seen films use trailers to manipulate lines before. If Maz is indeed speaking to Rey then we can conclude that she is Force sensitive and wants to set the scavenger on a path that will forever dominate her destiny.

Luke Skywalker Is still Missing

The world’s most famous Jedi was conspicuously absent from the official poster, released Sunday. Now we only get to see him in a shot with R2-D2, one we saw in the second official teaser. J.J. Abrams is clearly playing Mark Hamill’s role very close to the vest, and this leads us to believe we will barely see him in the film at all, right up until the end of the film.
