Episode: “Stride of Pride” (Season 1, Episode 3)
Jack takes a break from tanking NBC and starts dating four vastly different women to meet all of his needs. After discovering her inner girly girl, Liz decides she wants to have a ladies brunch with the women of TGS in order to discuss her sex life. Meanwhile, Jenna is on a mission to convince everyone that she is 56, so she’ll be deemed good-looking for her age. Liz is outraged when Tracy tweets about how women aren’t funny. Tracy later suggests that TGS should hire a monkey, since monkeys are hilarious. Liz sets out on a mission to prove that women are not only funny, but also funnier than monkeys.
While Jack is out with his sex idiot (one of his four lady friends), he runs into another one of his lady friends — Zarina Sbarro, pizza heiress — who just so happens to be out with her sex idiot, Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte. Jack realizes that he’s not the only one dating multiple people and then ponders what role he plays in his relationship with Zarina. To convince Tracy that women can be funny, Liz asks Jenna to join her in a performance of their two-woman comedy show. An uproarious montage ensues and ends with Tracy admitting that women can be funny. Well, he thinks the sketch was funny because Liz was playing a doctor and we all know women can’t be doctors. Hilarious! Liz calls it a victory anyhow. Jack discovers that he is the father figure in his relationship with Zarina. This upsets him at first, but then he decides to go with it. Who doesn’t love it when people bring you soup all of the time?
“Stride of Pride” was a fantastic episode to watch. Any time that Jack uses business methods to solve dating problems, I’m totally on board. At one point in the episode Jack said, “I think this woman is pokemoning me,” in reference to how Zarina is trying to “catch ‘em all” in regards to her love life. One of the highlights of the show was when Jack encounters Zarina’s sex idiot. This role was not-so-brilliantly-yet-oh-so-perfectly played by Ryan Lochte. Lochte simply showed up, took off his shirt and allowed words to fall out of his mouth. It could not have been more perfect.
Jenna also had a rather entertaining story line that involved an amazing Kenneth moment. To distract Jenna from an unflattering publication, Kenneth seduces Jenna by pouring “mop juice” all over his face and body. It was amazing. Liz had an interesting mission for this episode and it was great to see her scramble to convince Tracy that women can be funny. Additionally, I enjoyed the Sex and the City tie in, because nerd extraordinaire Liz Lemon is no Carrie Bradshaw (she’s more of a Miranda). The story lines in this episode blended seamlessly. After watching this episode twice, I was still entertained and found myself wanting to watch again.
Entertaining episode this week. Thrilled they decided to showcase more of the supporting cast on this one. Guest stars were fantastic, Kenneth made out with a mop, and an ADORABLE MONKEY made an appearance. I’m glad they took a break from the Jack tanking NBC story line and let Jack stress about something trivial, such as his love life. It’s highly entertaining to watch the “total package” (Jack’s words) have a complete existential breakdown.
