The Red Hot Chili Peppers need no introduction as the final headliner of ACL 2012, having been rocking out since 1983 and having ten studio albums to their credit. Their latest album, I’m With You, has not enjoy quite the same level of success as say, Californication, or even Stadium Arcadium, but it shows the staying power of one of America’s premiere groups.

As the final headliner for Sunday night at ACL, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were as probably a safe pick as any, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t rock the stage with a whole festival to themselves. “Californication” and “Otherside” garnered big (and obvious) cheers, but even understated (and newer) songs like “Snow” and “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” sounded great on Sunday night.

Not every ACL headliner provided an encore (though the crowd wanted all of them to come back), but the Peppers encore was well received as well especially their furious and frantic versions of “They’re Red Hot” and “Give it Away.”

We may not see The Red Hot Chili Peppers again at ACL for awhile (after all, we can’t promote them any higher than festival headliner), but the show they gave Sunday night disappointed few people. If this is the way ACL can close out each weekend next year, the festival should have no trouble maintaining it’s hold as one of the top musical gatherings in the country.
